Attaching a Standing Bird Mount by Joe Ferebee

The wire will also be hidden by the foot.

When mounting a bird in a one-legged position, it is especially important to anchor the bird securely to the base.

Begin by using the largest wire possible without distorting the leg.

Enter the wire forward of the pad and pass it up through the leg. Next, bend the wire in two 90° angles so that it is not visible by looking under the foot.

Drill a hole the size of the wire through the base.

Punch several holes into the base around the drill hole.

Mix up some Apoxie Sculpt and push it into the punched holes.

Encase the wire with Apoxie Sculpt where it exits the foot.

Push the leg wire though the drilled hole and anchor it into the base.

Spread out the Apoxie Sculpt putty by pressing on the webs of the feet, and shape the putty until you get a natural shape to the foot.

Any excess pushed out from under the foot can be trimmed away with a modeling tool.

Pin carding over the webs and into the base being careful not to pin through the foot.

Leave the carding on the foot for 24 hours, sufficient time for the Apoxie Sculpt to harden. If the cards are left on any longer the webs develop a flat look.

By using Apoxie Sculpt around the wire, foot and base, any possible wire movement is eliminated and considerable mount stability is created.
