The Snowshoe Rabbit inhabits mostly boreal forest and relies on a well developed running ability to escape danger instead of seeking cover. They will also attempt to avoid danger by first flattening on vegetation. The Snowshoe hare has a gray-brown coat in the summer which turns pure white in the winter. Some remain gray-brown year round in the humid coastal zones of western North America where snow fall is infrequent.
