Hide Measurements

Many people are unaware of the proper way to measure a hide for mounting. It isn't a difficult task, but knowing the correct areas to measure seems to be the difficult task for people. In this article we will discuss the correct way to measure your hide, and also attempt to show you through diagrams the proper locations.

First, let's look at gamehead measurements, such as deer, elk, etc.

Note: If you measure the B & C over the outside of the unskinned animal, you must subtract 2 inches for the hair.

A: Tip of nose to front corner of eye (take measurement before skinning)
B: Circumference of neck 3" below ears (best measured on carcass after skinning)
C: Circumference at ears (best measured on carcass after skinning)

Second, let's look at life-size measurements, such as bears, antelope, etc.

A: Tip of nose to front corner of eye (take measurement before skinning)

B: Neck circumference (best measured on carcass after skinning)

C: Tip of nose to base of tail (best measured on carcass after skinning)

D: Girth of belly (best measured on carcass after skinning)

BEFORE SKINNING

Measure eye to nose prior to skinning; it is best to use calipers to obtain this measurement. Using a tape can vary measurement as much as 1/2".

REHYDRATING & MEASURING A CAPE

To rehydrate a tanned cape, mix a solution of 1 gallon of water to 1/4 lb. of salt to 1/8 tsp. bactericide. Soak the cape in enough water to completely submerge the whole hide. After 1-2 hours of soaking, remove the cape and drain for 15 minutes, then place in a plastic bag and place in a refrigerator for 6-12 hours.

To stretch the cape for measurement, first stretch the cape for length by grasping the head and brisket and pulling firmly. Grasp the cape directly below both ears and firmly but slowly stretch for width. As you stretch, closely watch the brisket, as the brisket begins to move, stop stretching. Measure directly below the ears for the C measurement. Move 3 inches below the ears and again measure across the cape for the B measurement.
