Like all alums, Ammonium Alum can be used to tan hides without pre-pickling, however pre-pickling skins prior to alum tanning produces plumper softer leather. Alum tanning can also secure hair on light hair slippage due to, in most cases bacterial infestation. A 48 hr. pre-pickle, followed by an application of Curatan proves the versatility of this product. Produces white leather! Always oil an alum tanned skin to prevent leaching of chemicals!
