Rittel's Saftee Acid is one of the safest acids available today. It provides a wide range of acidity, with none of the disadvantages of other acids such as Sulphuric/Form/Acetic/Oxalic. It is practically odorless, with no caustic fumes, non-poisonous, no dilution heat, will not evaporate, and is an excellent choice for pickling as well as adjusting pH levels.
Pickling Formula:
For every 1 gallon of pickle needed, use 1 gallon of water
1 lb of non-iodized salt
1/2 fl. oz. of Saftee Acid
This should give you a pH level at about a 1.0, as long as you hold the pickle below a 2.0 you should have no problems. It will remain very stable. Leave the skins in the pickle for 3 days until they are thoroughly pickled. Then the skins can be removed, drained, shaven, degreased (if necessary), washed, rinsed, and returned to the pickle for another 24 hours before neutralizing the acid and tanning. We have safely left skins in the pickle for up to 4 weeks with no harm.
