Preservz-It Instructions

                                      Preservz-It

                              A Bruce Rittel Product

Preservz-It is an ideal replacement for Formaldehyde. It has the same desirable qualities, such as being a tannage and an excellent tissue drier. Once tanned with Preservz-It the tissue is stablized. It is not a Carcinogen!

1. As a hair set in pickles. Ideal for "iffy" or borderline skins and capes. Simply mix the water and salt as you normally would for the pickle and then add 1/2 fluid ounce of Preservz-It per gallon. Allow the cape to set in this solution for 30 minutes, then add the picklin acid, set the pH level and pickle as ususal.

2. As a cure for loose hair after tanning. If you are plagued by loose hair as your cape dries, after tanning, rinse the cape or skin, then soak it in a solution of Preservz-It. Use 4 ounces of salt and 1/2 fluid ounce of Preservz-It for every gallon of water needed. Soak 30 minutes, remove, rinse, drain, and tumble for 5 minutes; then oil.

                                                    OR

At the end of the tanning, add 1/2 fluid ounce of Preservz-It to the tanning solution, and let soak another 30 minutes before removing, rinsing and oiling.

3. As a lobster tan: Mix a solution of 4 ounces of borax and 1 fluid ounce of Preservz-It to every gallon of water needed to submerge the entire lobster. Use a dremel to make small holes in the underside of the legs and all the accessible areas. (They can be puttied over later when the lobster dries). Soak the lobster 1 week. Then drain and mount. Pin it in place in the desired position.

4. As bird feet injection fluid: Preservz-It is compatible with glycerin and white glue. Inject straight Preservz-It directly into the toes, legs, and wing tips of birds.

5. To set fresh antlers in velvet: Using a soak method, first prick the velvet all over, using a sharp needle, and soak antlers 1 to 2 hours in Blood Eater solution (2 ounces Blood Eater to every 5 gallons of water). Then simply mix a solution using 4 ounces Borax and 1 fluid ounce of Preservz-It to every gallon of water needed to completely submerge the antlers. Allow the antlers to soak 1 week, remove and dry.

6. To set fresh velvet using the injection method: First prick the end of each tine to allow a flow of fluid. With a hypodermic needle and using 100% Preservz-It, inject into the knurl or base of the antler into the veins feeding the velvet. This will force any blood in the velvet out through the tips of the tines. When complete, you should see clear Preservz-It flowing from the tip of the tines. After saturation, paint Preservz-It on the velvet, hang and let dry.

7. To set dried antlers in velvet that may be peeling or hanging: Re-wet the antlers and velvet and simply paint on Preservz-It, hang and let dry.
