Oxalic Acid

Pickle Bath: Use 1/2 ox. Oxalic Acid (volume measure) per gallon of water. Add 3/4 to 1 lb. of non-iodized salt to each gallon of water. Use a small portion of hot tap water to pre-dissolve acid and salt. Avoid breathing the acid dust and also avoid breathing the fumes when combining acid with hot water.

The pH of acid pickle after mixing should run in the pH range of about 2. Always make sure the pickle solution has cooled to room temperature before placing the skin into.60 to 75 degrees F is a good temperature for the pickling and tanning process. You can also add small amounts of a bactericide (Basacryl NB_KU) and a wetting agent (Van -Wet 9N9) to the acid pickle if desired. Use Oxalic Acid rather than pickling crystals when using Tannium or any other Chrome Sulfate tanning material. Store Oxalic Acid in a cool dry area to prevent moisture pick up and caking. Always wear rubber gloves when mixing or handling Oxalic Acid.

Neutralize Oxalic Acid solutions with pre-diluted Sodium Bicarbonate. Store Oxalic Acid out of reach of children!
